Southern Snacks Cookbook

The Southern Sympathy Cookbook

I'm P.C., and I have studied food and cooking around the world, mostly by eating, but also through serious study. Coursework at Le Cordon Bleu London and intensive courses in Morocco, Thailand and France have broadened my culinary skill and palate. But my kitchen of choice is at home, cooking like most people, experimenting with unique but practical ideas.

I live, mostly in my kitchen, in my hometown of Memphis, Tennessee.

Blackberry Sugar Pie

If you scroll through the Sweets section on The Runaway Spoon, you may notice a host of very simple pie recipes. Because I think pie is a perfect dessert, for the cook and the consumer. The variety of wonderful things that can be packed into a pie crust is extraordinary. And with little effort, […]

Orange Slice Candy Squares

My grandmother lived in a small town in Arkansas, the town where my father grew up. She died when I was six, so my memories of her are somewhat limited. But those I do have are vivid to me, though undoubtedly burnished through the patina of time. I particularly remember visiting her with my […]

Coconut Cloud Pie

I have a funny relationship with coconut. I don’t buy coconut candy bars, I leave the coconut balls behind in the assorted chocolate box, would order caramel over coconut cake and don’t do coconut rum drinks. But when I happen to be served a coconut sweet, I always love it, and wonder why I […]

Pumpkin Dulce de Leche Bars

‘Tis the season for all things pumpkin – and it is my favorite time of year. I love pumpkin. Sweet, savory, anyway it comes. I go a little overboard with pumpkin – I buy all the seasonal pumpkin flavored items on the store shelves, and cook with pumpkin like crazy. Check out these cookies, […]

Lemon Meringue Pie Ice Cream

I am a little bit of a kitchen gadget geek. Particularly when it comes to gadgets that claim to make things easier. I love my strawberry slicer, my cherry pitter and my onion chopper, but when it comes to the cabinet-space sucking larger gadgets, I tend to think twice. But a few years ago, […]

Chocolate Toffee Celebration Cake

Just under a year ago, I put up the first post on The Runaway Spoon, my instructions for real Buttermilk Fried Chicken with a story about my encounter with Julia Child. It took a couple of years of consideration and many months of planning and design to get the site started, but here I […]

Buttermilk Pie

For some reason, I tend to think of pie as a summer or spring dessert. Maybe I hold that image of picnics and outdoor parties where the loaded summer fruit pies come out, peach and strawberry and fresh, juicy fruit – with a pecan pie thrown in for good measure. But pie […]

Elvis Has Left the Building

I am a born and raised Memphis girl, so I could not let this day pass without a mention. January 8 is Elvis’s birthday, and this year he would have been 75. And when you grow up in Memphis, Elvis sort of permeates the atmosphere.

Here in Memphis, Elvis is generally commemorated […]
