Fresh Corn Grits

August 12, 2012 by The Runaway Spoon 3 Comments

I was standing in my kitchen, on a Saturday after my farmers market run, putting everything in its proper place while I made my plan of attack for the day.  Stacked up on the counter were a dozen ears of corn, destined to be blanched, stripped and frozen in little baggies.  Next to that was a lovely bag of freshly ground Delta Grind grits, also destined for the freezer.  It was … [Read more...] about Fresh Corn Grits

Pickled Field Peas

August 5, 2012 by The Runaway Spoon 8 Comments

Field peas are one of my favorite things about summer.  I freeze them in little baggies to pull out at the height of the winter blahs to remind me of the warmer months.  I always seem to remember them as warmer months, not miserable, stifling hot and humid. July 25, 2012 by The Runaway Spoon Leave a Comment

From April through October, during farmers market season, I rarely visit the produce section of the grocery store. Why bother when there is so much beautiful, fresh, in season produce at the markets.  I only seek out a few things that don’t grow here.  Lemons and limes, cherries from Michigan and Washington (I call to see when shipments arrive to get them as fresh as … [Read more...] about Chilled Vidalia Onion Soup

I'm P.C. I think I am like most people. Somewhere in the middle between food snob and food schlub. Just being in the kitchen makes me happy. I live, mostly in my kitchen, in my hometown of Memphis, Tennessee.
